Youth Leadership
and the SEE Alliance
Our speaker is Zander Moricz, the 20-year old Founder and Executive Director of SeeAlliance (Social Equity Through Education Alliance). Zander has become a “force of nature” in his work with SeeAlliance, following his graduation from Pine View High School in Sarasota. He is also a primary plaintiff in the Don’t Say Gay Lawsuit against Governor Ron DeSantis and the State of Florida. SEEAlliance is a coalition of thousands of grassroots organizers from across the United States and has been a major activist organization in Sarasota fighting for diversity, equity, and inclusion in Sarasota’s public education system. We’ll hear about the Alliance’s work here, as well as the challenges facing K-12 education in Sarasota.
Moderator, Dick Stammer; Zoom host, Marie Keeney.

Forum at 9:15 am:
What are the Development Issues
Facing Newtown?
Forum is honored that one of Newtown’s most respected and activist elders will speak to us about issues such as the failure of Sarasota to invest development funds in Newtown.
Grimes, a local barber, is an entrepreneur and a community organizer. He picked up activism from his mentor Robert “Bud” Thomas, also a barber. At the urging of her sister, Grimes’ mother left Georgia to find work in the homes of wealthy Sarasota families. She contracted tuberculosis and was placed in a treatment facility leaving her baby in the care of a godmother.
Grimes’ guardian, Lenora Madame Brooks, a midwife of Cuban descent delivered many of Newtown’s children because Sarasota Memorial Hospital was inaccessible to African Americans. Brooks was considered a neighborhood physician. Her husband, also Cuban, made cigars in a nearby space on 35th Street. Newtown residents gathered around the radio at their house to hear boxing matches. At 11, Grimes was cared for by an aunt, another entrepreneur who operated a janitorial service in the early 50’s. Business ownership is in his DNA. He can’t escape it; and after 37 years of entrepreneurship, he doesn’t plan to.
Presenter, Jetson Grimes; Moderator, Marie Keeney; Zoom Host, Hilles Hughes.

Sermon by Rev. Jay Wolin
The title of today’s service was the theme of our 2024 General Assembly. What are the stories we tell about ourselves? Individually, as the Unitarian Universalists of Sarasota and as a religion writ large? How do the stories we integrate into our lives help shape our outlook? How do others’ stories shape us?

Sermon by Rev. Jay Wolin
I have always been a goal oriented person. I sometimes don’t reach my goal. Other times I far exceed my goals. Still other times, my journey leads me to unanticipated results and I am forced to adapt to changing circumstances. Unitarian Universalism as well adapts to changing times and circumstances. Each year the Board goes on a retreat to imagine the future of the Unitarian Universalists of Sarasota. I will share some of the goals we discerned for the future.

Sermon by Rev. Jay Wolin
In Douglas Adams' book The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy the “Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe and Everything” is 42. Adams in multiple interviews has said it was a joke, and he just made up the number. My mind immediately jumped to this “Question” when I saw the Movie “42” about Jackie Robinson. I will explore the connections and its implication for our religion.
