UUCS MUSIC COMMITTEE
Minutes of Meeting Held on Oct. 13, 2022
Present: Catherine Bonner, Mike Brooks, Don Bryn, Mary Lou Keller, Robert Lischetti, Klaus Obermeit, Miriam Snyder, Yolanda Stevens, Jay Wolin
1. After discussion, the following mission statement for the committee was approved unanimously:
The Music Committee's mission is to work collaboratively with staff to ensure a strong music program for UUCS, one which
complements, supports, and enhances the Sunday morning worship experience;
enriches the life of the congregation in a variety of activities;
enhances the congregation's quest for diversity by providing music that is appealing to people of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and other individual characteristics;
provides an outlet for those members of the congregation who find satisfaction in expressing themselves musically, whether as singers or as instrumentalists; and
establishes UUCS as a major source of high-quality music within the broader Sarasota community of churches and congregations.
2. Klaus Obermeit demonstrated use of the Worship Calendar Sarasota (UUCS), which presents a detailed description of each service including sermon topics, speakers, music, etc. It is used extensively by Jay Wolin, Robert Lischetti, Don Bryn and the Multimedia Committee, and outside musicians. It is an important tool for all involved in Sunday morning services, and--of particular relevance to our committee--includes a Music Calendar. This Google document is accessible to all committee members.
3. Another source of information is the Church's website, which includes a Music section under the Music Tab containing extensive information about the Church's music program. It includes practice videos of music to be performed by the choir, a schedule of guest musicians, and a number of potentially useful links; some of these materials, however, have not been updated recently.
3. Copyrights were discussed. Obtaining copyright permissions must be initiated well in advance, since it can become complicated and time-consuming.
4. Arlene Sweeting has suggested several Saturdays on which musicians are performing at Fogartyville who might be appropriate for our services as well. These dates are 1/8/23, 2/12/23, and 4/9/23. Jay reminded the committee that he wants to meet with all guest musicians prior to the services at which they will perform.
5. Don Bryn initiated a discussion based on the fact that, as we emerge from the Covid era, there are many aspects of our music program that need to be rebuilt. He feels that we do not yet have a workable structure in place, and need to become more systematic with our policies and procedures. What kinds of music are we going to include, and with what frequency? What steps must be taken to ensure a smoothly-functioning schedule of guest musicians; how do we schedule their rehearsals; etc.? If we plan to book Sarasota Orchestra musicians, he said, the time to do so is now upon us, since their season is just beginning and their schedules will fill up rapidly. If we eventually return to having two services each Sunday, additional coordination will be required. A survey of the congregation would be useful, he suggested, focused on our members' preferences and expectations regarding our music program.
6. Regarding the identification and recruitment of guest musicians, hope was expressed that Don Demaio will agree to work with Yolanda Stevens for at least a while as she acquires experience with this assignment. Don Bryn, Klaus Obermeit, and Mary Lou Keller offered to work with her as well.
7. The meeting ended at 7:25 so as to facilitate the beginning of choir rehearsal. It was agreed that the committee has much to do, has only scratched the surface thus far, and should meet again as soon as possible.
