The Truth About Biodegradable Products
Products marked as certified biodegradable or compostable do not easily degrade in a home compost or standard landfill facility. Even those certified BPI (or using PLA, a plant-based plastic) need to be disposed of in a commercial recycling center. Sarasota does not have a commercial composting facility. So, best to avoid BPI certified products and look for the certifications shown here, which will degrade in a home compost or landfill.
What to do with all those Legos your children used to love to play with?
Because they're #7 plastic, they're hard to recycle locally. Here are some alternatives.
- Legos can be sent for reuse: https://www.brickrecycler.com/
- A shipping label for donating them: https://bricksforacure.org/how-it-works-donate-legos/
- This site will purchase your Legos for resale: http://replaybricks.com/

Disposing of Hazardous Waste
You may be surprised at the products in your home that have the words “danger,” “warning,” “caution” and “poison” on the label. Never dispose of these toxic household items down the sink, on the ground, down a storm drain or in your garbage. Some household products without warning labels are also considered hazardous, such as computers, compact fluorescent lamps and batteries. Check our Hazardous Waste Guide to be sure how to dispose of these items.

Visit the ReUzit Shop in Sarasota to pick up items brought to the Chemical Collection Centers that are still in usable condition make up the inventory found in the ReUzIt Shop.  Rather than pay a hazardous waste company to dispose of these products, the county opened the ReUzIt Shop to serve county residents.
