WHY DON’T THEY JUST COME LEGALLY?
A TRIP TO UNDERSTAND THE IMMIGRATION EXPERIENCE
Americans often ask why the many undocumented immigrants in America do not simply get papers to come here legally. They generally do not understand that coming legally involves having definite reasons to return home: a solid job contract, owning property and having a good bit of money in the bank. Coming to the US out of fear of gang or political violence, or because a child needs unaffordable medical care do not serve as justification for legal immigration.
So, what is it actually like to be an undocumented immigrant? This trip, to the border in Arizona, under the auspices of the UU Immigration Justice Coalition, is designed to build a solid level of understanding of who is crossing and why. How are they received at the border and beyond? What happens once they have crossed?
Travelers will learn from the organizations that work directly with undocumented migrants. They will go into the Sonoran Desert with those that work to prevent immigrant deaths there. They will consider discrepant views on the issues of immigration by visiting a Border Patrol station and a detention center. Each evening, we will have a debriefing session to reflect on what we learned that day.
