Guest at Your Table

UU Service Committee News:
Guest at Your Table
Who is the Guest at Your Table?
Who is visiting your home today for dinner? Is it “Suleyman Wellings-Longmore, a legal fellow with the Haitian Bridge Alliance who is researching the ways racism is impacting the experiences of migrants of color in the US,”* perhaps even those in the news from Springfield, OH? Or Konea Ishimura, a climate activist who is helping the Marshallese people heal from the nuclear testing the US did? Or someone from the Pink Haven Coalition who is creating networks of safety for trans and gender expansive people even here in Florida? Or Anna-Maria Tesfaye who leads an organization protecting the Queer community in Ukraine?
They all sound like such interesting and enlightening guests! As you might know, we are in the process of raising funds for the UU Service Committee as we “Expand the Welcome Table.” This is a program that is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. We at UUSRQ have decided to revive the program at our congregation which many members and friends missed over the years. A good number of our folks have picked up the boxes to place on your table that symbolizes welcoming a guest and providing a nominal donation of what it might cost to have them break bread with you. If you don’t have a box yet, you can pick one up after each service as well as a booklet that details each of the above guests. Please return the boxes the first two Sundays in January. If you have questions, please contact Linda Bodycomb, the UUSC Liaison at 410-610-9118 or at [email protected].
Thanks for your support!
Since it began in 1975, the Guest at Your Table program has introduced generations of Unitarian Universalists to our grassroots partners working for justice around the world with your support. This church year, we are celebrating Guest at Your Table’s 50thanniversary with the theme “Expanding the Welcome Table.”
Many parents use this program to introduce the practice of charitable giving to their children, but families without children like to participate no matter their age. We are providing boxes to put money in at sit-down meals at home and a pamphlet about the highlighted programs for this year. Its a way to imagine someone from another place visiting your table and you get to learn about them, their lives, their work and their culture.
If you would like a box and a pamphlet, stop by the table near the Social Justice table in the courtyard after the service. This program will last until January 12 when we ask you to bring your boxes back to us. Click here to learn more about the program. Or you can talk to our UUSC Liaison, Linda Bodycomb at the table.
